Why Am I Talking?

Have you ever asked youself this question? I know I have. Sometimes I do right in the middle of a sentance. I’ll be sharing a story or experience and realize, ‘I should be listening instead of talking right now’. I’ve learned to recognize the visual cues that tell me it’s time to really listen right now. And sure, sometimes it’s mid story, but that’s Ok. I just redirect the conversation back to them with asimple statement and follow it up with a question.

Let me explain. Let’s say it’s the scenario above and I’ve realized this person really needs to be sharing right now. I will simply interrupt my story or statement and say something like, ‘hey, enough about me, tell me more about …….’.

Then I stop talking, give them 100% of my attention, and LISTEN. Yes I listen. I push away any distraction, internal or external, and truly focus on THEM. No one or nothing else matters in that moment. What they have to say is the most important thing in that moment. PERIOD.

In my coaching and training programs I go into great detail on the cues, distractions, and techniques. But for now, try this one thing when that thought, ‘why am I talking’, comes to mind. Use the simple technique I shared in the example above and you WILL improve your ‘CONNECTION’ with the person you are talking to. Just try it exactly like I shared above and see what happens. The results are awesome.
