To Go Far, Go Deep

“Many will start well. Few will finish well.” — Frank Boudreau
There are so many how-to resources today that you can learn how to do virtually anything if you have access to the internet. I mean, how often are you faced with needing to know how to do something you don’t know how to? I’m a do-it-yourself guy like so many are today. For one, it’s a lot less expensive than paying someone else to do it. Secondly, it gives me a certain satisfaction being able to accomplish something myself. The internet is my most used and universal tool that I pull out of the”toolbox” when I’m about to tackle a project for the first time. It’s pretty handy isn’t it. But getting some good instruction and accomplishing something one time doesn’t make me an expert.
In life and in leadaship you are going to see many get out of the gate well and they look like they are going to be very successful. Perhaps they read a couple of books or watched a couple of how-to videos that laid out the”steps to success”. But at some point things are not going to go according to the book or the video. At some point the storms will come and the pressure will come. That’s when we find out if we’ve gone deep enough.
You see, if you want to go far, if you want to go the distance, you’ve got to go deep. You have to put in the work to build a deep and strong foundation or the pressure will crush you and the storm will blow you away. You have to put in the time to learn and walk in humility to know that you don’t know it all.

Think about the athlete. Many have strong arms and legs but the ones that have the stamina to go the distance are the ones that focus a lot of energy on their core. They understand that muscular arms and legs might look good but without a strong core they aren’t nearly as effective as they could be. A strong core makes everything else far more effective. So when we think about our ability to effectively lead, strong foundations are built by working on your core. Focusing on the deeper things that really matter like character, integrity, humility, grit, determination, honor, and respect.

So, if you want to go the distance, you gotta go deep.

Be blessed
